The End of an Incredible Coaching Career: Joe Lombard Retires

After 42 years, legendary girls high school basketball coach Joe Lombard announced his retirement on Tuesday through a video conference hosted by the Canyon I.S.D. 

The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame member said he feels like it's the right time to end his coaching career with all that is going on in his life.  He mentioned behing able to see his elderly mother in Indiana, spending time with his grandkids and his own health as reasons for the decision, along with the desire to actually sleep past 7 a.m.

Lombard said he still loves the pursuit and journey of the season, working with the kids and learning the game. As he became emotional, he said he has been blessed to have the career he has had. 

He thanked the Nazareth and Canyon communities along with all the administrators and faculty members, players and his family. 

Coach Lombard finishes with a remarkable 1379 wins in his basketball coaching career with just 133 losses. His teams won a total of 19 state championships, 13 at Canyon and 6 at Nazareth. In his entire career, he never had a team miss the playoffs.

Well wishes during the video conference came from the UIL Executive Director Charles Breithtaupt, UIL's Director of Athletics Susan Elza and the Executive Director of the Texas Girls Coaches Association Sam Tipton.
