Tascosa Girls to Challenge No. 1 Canyon

It's not a district game but Tuesday's girls basketball matchup between 4A Canyon and 6A Tascosa is an interesting one for several reasons.

Both teams reached the regional semifinals last season and have key players from those teams leading the way this season. Among those are two of the best players in the area - Jada Miller of Tascosa and Kenadee Winfrey of Canyon.

Miller, a senior, averages 22 points per game this season, including a 34 point effort against Amarillo High back in December. She has the ability to take over a game with her shooting and athleticism.

Winfrey is just a sophomore but has already received several offers from Division One college programs. She leads a balanced Canyon team with 10 points per game and also averages 5 rebounds and 2 steals per contest.

The Lady Eagles are the number one-ranked team in Class 4A with a 19-1 record this season. Their only loss has been to 6A top-ten Denton Guyer. Canyon is coming off a 20 point win at 6A Frenship last Friday.

The Lady Rebels come into the game 16-7. They won the championship at the Weatherford Tournament just after Christmas. Tascosa's latest win came last Friday at home against 2A number four-ranked Gruver. Guard Jessalyn Gonzales exploded for 42 points in that game for Tascosa.
