On a day when the starting pitching faltered, the Amarillo High Sandies showed they can win with their hitting too.  The Sandies pounded out 16 hits and overcame a 5-run deficit to beat the Coronado Mustangs 20-12 at O'Banion Field in Lubbock.

The offense was led by Rhett Maynard, who slugged two triples among his four hits and drove in seven runs.  Jeb Jenkins, Memo Frausto, Maycin Smotherman, Brett Williams and Corbin Langham all had two hits each.

Senior right-hander Rhett Maynard started on the mound but struggled. He went three innings allowing 9 runs, 6 earned, on 9 hits.

Spencer Thurman pitched the last four innings and slowed down the Coronado attack, allowing the Sandies to pull away. Thurman gave up 3 runs on two hits with 6 strikeouts.

In other 3-5A games, Randall won at Lubbock High 11-3. The Raiders sit in 5th place in the district standings, a game and a half behind Coronado, Monterey and Lubbock Cooper.

In District 3-4A, Canyon moved a step closer to clinching the crown with a 17-7 win at home over Estacado. An Eagles win on the road Friday over the Matadors will clinch the title for Canyon.
