Sandies Stay on Top; Dons in 2nd in 3-5A Boys Race

The Amarillo Sandies pulled away in the second half to win at Lubbock Cooper 48-31. The win keeps the Sandies unbeaten in District 3-5A at 7-0 and in first place. 

The game was tight throughout the first half with Amarillo leading 27-22 at halftime. The Sandies outscored the Pirates 15-7 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 42-29 heading into the fourth. The defense did the rest, holding Cooper to just two points in the 4th quarter for the win. 

Junior guard Chris Dees led the offense with 20 points, which included six, 3-point baskets.  

Palo Duro boys survived a scare against Coronado to move into sole possession of 2nd place in the standings, one game behind Amarillo High. PD trailed heading into the 4th quarter before pulling out a 54-48 win to improve to 5-1 in district. 

The Caprock boys dropped a 61-53 decision to Plainview.

On the girls' side, number one-ranked Amarillo High had some trouble with Lubbock Cooper but won on the road 76-62. The game was tied at 52 through three quarters but the Lady Sandies outscored Cooper 24-10 in the final period to pull away and improve to 9-0 in district play. 

Zayla Tinner led the Lady Sandies with 21 points. Junior wing Rachel Haase hit three treys in the fourth quarter and Sophomore Briley Barnes scored all 8 of her points in the 4th period.

The Palo Duro girls team also won, downing Coronado 55-36. The win keeps PD in a tie for third in the district at 5-4. 

Caprock girls fell to Plainview 50-37. 

In District 2-6A, Tascosa girls moved to 2-0 with an 89-60 win at home over Odessa.

4A number one-ranked Canyon beat Lamesa 69-15 to improve to 2-0 in District 3-4A. 

The Canyon boys team had their final tune up before district play on Monday night. The Eagles fell to Clovis 73-54.

Randall teams both had open dates on Tuesday and did not play. 

Tascosa boys team also was open before they open district play on Friday.
