Sandies, Eagles Start Playoffs with Shutouts

Strong pitching carries both Amarillo High and Canyon to wins on Thursday in playoff openers. 

The Sandies' Rhett Maynard retired 15 straight batters at one point and allowed just 3 hits in six innings. He also had three strikeouts and no walks. Peyton Conner finished it off with a perfect 7th inning, including one strikeout. 

At the plate, Amarillo High's Memo Frausto had two hits and drove in three runs.

The Sandies will play Game Two of the series at home on Saturday beginning at 11 A.M. Live coverage of the game can be heard at tpsnsport.com.

Canyon scored all the runs they would need in the first inning in a 16-0, five inning rout of Borger. 

The Eagles plated 3 in the first, 6 in the  2nd, 5 more in the third and 2 in the fourth inning. Zane Sparks blasted a 3-run homer, Brett Cobb had a 2-run shot and drove in 3 runs. Zac Hunt and Cash Hamby also drove in two runs apiece. 

On the mound, Cade Olsen went three innings without allowing a hit. He finished with three strikeouts and 2 walks. Jackson Aragon came on to pitch the final two innings and did not allow a run.  He gave up the only hit of the game for the Bulldogs, plus had two strikeouts and one walk.

The Eagles will try to finish off the Bulldogs in Game Two of the series Friday at 5 p.m. at Conner Park in Canyon.
