After dropping a disappointing game to Amarillo High just before Christmas, the Palo Duro Dons needed a win at home on New Year's Eve to stay among the District 3-5A leaders.  However, it would have to come against one of the teams tied for the top spot in district, Monterey.

The Dons managed to get the much needed win on their home court on Tuesday 85-77 over the Plainsmen, keeping themselves near the top of the race.

Jelani Mohamed finished with 26 points to lead four PD players in double figures. Kaje Lee had 21, Braedyn Harley scored 18 and Thaddeus Udoh 17 in the win.

The Dons only trailed once during the game, 46-44 early in the 3rd quarter, but went on a 14-2 run to go up by ten, and then hold off the Plainsmen down the stretch. PD hit 15 of 16 free throws in the 4th quarter to hand Monterey it's first district loss.

In the girls game, a young and scrappy Palo Duro team fell behind by 28 points but battled back before falling to 25th ranked Monterey 73-60.

The Lady Plainsmen led 61-33 after three quarters but PD didn't give up and got the lead down to 12 by outscoring Monterey 27-12 in the 4th quarter.
