Caprock Stuns Monterey in 3-5A Baseball

The Caprock Longhorns had to rally twice but would not be denied in upsetting the MontereyPl ainsmen 11-10 in 3-5A baseball on Tuesday. 

After falling behind early 7-0, the Longhorns started their comeback and by the end of the 6th inning had taken a 9-8 lead. The Plainsmen made things tough by scoring two runs in the top of the 7th to go up 10-9. However, with the game on the line, Caprock quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th and benefited from two walks to take the 11-10 win, which is the first for the Longhorns in district play.

Richard Deleon scored the winning run and had 2 hits and 3 RBI. Jaiden Tinajero had 4 hits and an RBI, and Damien Pena allowed just 2 earned runs in the last 5.1 innings on the mound.

3-5A leader Amarillo High continued to roll along. The Sandies won at Plainview 11-0 in 5 innings behind a complete game shutout by pitcher Brett Williams. At the plate, Kade Atkins had a home run and 4 RBI, while Maycin Smotherman had two doubles and 6 runs batted in. 

Also in 3-5A, Randall fell to Coronado in Lubbock 5-2 and Lubbock Cooper shut out Lubbock High 10-0. 

Canyon's Clay Artho led the Eagles to a 25-3 rout of Lamesa on Senior Day at Conner Park. 

Artho finished with 7 RBI on two home runs and a single. Cade Olson slugged 3 hits and scored four times. Brett Cobb also had 3 hits, including a homer, and 4 RBI. Zane Sparks drove in three runs in addition to pitching three innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits. Jace Venhaus tossed the final couple of innings and gave up a run on 3 hits as the Eagles clinched at least a tie for the District 3-4A title. Canyon can claim the title outright with a win at Lamesa on Friday.

Tascosa and Palo Duro teams both had open dates on Tuesday.
