AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The latest statewide high school football rankings from Dave Campbell’s Texas Football are officially out, and the Texas Panhandle is heavily represented with seven local squads earning top-10 spots across their respective classifications.
Headlining the area’s dominant showing is Stratford, which has claimed the No. 1 ranking in Class 2A Division II.
Six other area teams join them in the statewide spotlight after strong season-opening performances.
Here is a breakdown of where our local teams stand after Week 1 and what lies ahead as they look to maintain their statewide momentum.
Class 3A Division II
- No. 6 Canadian Wildcats: Canadian opened its campaign with a statement victory over Panhandle in Week 1. The Wildcats will face another formidable local opponent in Bushland next week.
Class 2A Division II
- No. 1 Stratford Elks: The top-ranked Elks solidified their championship aspirations by defeating Sunray in the season opener. Stratford has a highly anticipated matchup on deck next week against Panhandle.
- No. 3 Gruver Greyhounds: Gruver surged to the No. 3 spot following an impressive Week 1 victory over Hooker. Up next for the Greyhounds is a battle with Spearman.
- No. 9 Wellington Skyrockets: Wellington jumped up to No. 9 after defeating Spearman in the opening week. The Skyrockets will look to keep the momentum rolling next week against Vernon.
Class 1A Division I
- No. 9 Nazareth Swifts: The Swifts stay in the top 10 after defeating Happy in Week 1. They face a premier test next week when they take on No. 6 Borden County.
Class 1A Division II
- No. 8 McLean Tigers: McLean stays at the No. 8 spot following a season-opening victory over West Texas. The Tigers will prepare to play Booker next week.
- No. 10 Paducah Dragons: Paducah earned the final spot in the top 10. Unlike the rest of the ranked field, the Dragons have yet to take the field and will officially kick off their season next week against Springlake-Earth.
