MEMPHIS, Texas (KFDA) - Friday night lights will still shine in Memphis this fall, but the game on the field will look dramatically different.
In a stunning announcement, Memphis ISD announced that the Cyclones have canceled their traditional 11-man football season due to a critical shortage of players.
Instead of letting the gridiron go cold, the school is completely shifting gears, transitioning immediately to “outlaw” six-man football for the upcoming season to ensure its students still have the opportunity to play.
Adapting to a Numbers Game
Roster depth has been an ongoing battle for smaller rural classifications across Texas, and Memphis ultimately hit a tipping point where fielding a safe, competitive 11-man squad was no longer viable.
By pivoting to the six-man game, famed for its rapid pace, wide-open field, and high scoring, the school is keeping its football program alive while adapting to its current student demographics.

Because the decision comes outside of the standard realignment window, the Cyclones will operate as an “outlaw” program.
In Texas high school sports, “outlaw” status means the team will play an independent, unaligned schedule completely outside of the University Interscholastic League (UIL) system.
While this independent route disqualifies Memphis from competing for an official UIL state championship this year, it allows the school to quickly build a custom schedule against other independent six-man programs, private schools, or junior varsity teams facing similar numbers constraints.
A Fast, Electric Brand of Football
Despite the massive structural shift, school administrators are urging Cyclone Nation to embrace the change and pack the stands.
In an official statement released via social media, Memphis ISD promised that the heart of the town’s Friday night tradition remains intact, writing:

“Due to a lack of numbers for a full squad, our standard football season has been officially cancelled. However, we are not letting the gridiron go cold. We are shifting gears completely and hitting the field to play Outlaw 6-Man football instead! Get ready for an incredibly fast, high-scoring, and electric style of football. It is going to be a wild season, and we need our fans in the stands louder than ever.”
Memphis ISD confirmed that an official six-man schedule is currently in the works and will be released to the public as soon as matchups are finalized.
