AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Twin brothers Matthew and Kyle Lovorn are both head coaches at Canyon High School, with Matthew leading the Eagles football program and Kyle heading boys basketball.
The Lovorn brothers grew up in Canyon and said returning to coach at their alma mater was something they never expected.
“Being able to work with my twin brother is pretty unique, obviously, but also just being back in the same place that we grew up, being in the same locker rooms, being on the same court, the same field, being in the same school,” Kyle said. “That’s a pretty unique opportunity that was pretty fun to experience for the first time.”
Matthew said returning to Canyon was about giving back to the program that shaped them.
“Just being able to give back to the program that gave so much to me has been really cool and unique,” Matthew said. “I’ve been able to take over and just lead in a direction that we really believe in.”

The brothers said the coaches they had growing up influenced their decision to pursue coaching and that working together at the same school was never something they thought would happen.
“Coaches that we had growing up have made a big impact on the reason why we coach now,” Kyle said. “We’ve kind of always talked over the years like, hey, that’d be neat if we could coach at the same school at some point. But honestly, never really thought it would happen at our alma mater.”
Matthew said the trust built over a lifetime gives Canyon’s athletic department a unique advantage.
“I’ve known this guy nine months before I was born,” Matthew said. “I don’t have anybody closer to me than Kyle. When I’ve got my twin brother coaching one of our programs and in charge of that, the trust factor and loyalty just goes out the roof. That’s a huge benefit in any athletic program.”
