CANYON, Texas (KFDA) - West Texas A&M men’s basketball coach Tom Brown announced Friday the program has signed transfer guard KJ Thomas for the 2026-27 season.
The addition
Thomas, a 6-foot-1 guard, comes to Canyon after spending two seasons at UTEP. Over 55 games, 24 as a starter, he shot 40.8% from the field and connected on 26.5% of his 3-point attempts.
He was also 74-of-102 at the free throw line and finished his time with the Miners with 89 rebounds, 106 assists and 43 steals.
Prep standout
Before arriving at UTEP, Thomas made his mark at Randall High School.
He guided the Raiders to back-to-back State Tournament appearances in 2023 and 2024, the only two in school history, and was ranked the fourth-best point guard in Texas as a senior.

Thomas left Randall as the school’s all-time leader in points (2,592), assists (583) and made 3-pointers in a single season (133).
What they’re saying
Brown said Thomas brings both skill and competitive experience to the Buffaloes roster.
“KJ is a fantastic player on both ends of the court, he knows the game and has a toughness to him,” Brown said. “He has played a couple years and has competed at a high level. It will be fun to have KJ in the program as he knows how to win. KJ has a great family and we are excited to have him at WT!”
Former Randall head coach Trevor Johnson praised the signing as well.
“KJ is arguably the most decorated player to come out of Randall,” Johnson said. “Most importantly, he is a winner! Go Buffs!”
