CANYON, Texas (KFDA) - The Canyon Lions Club presented the 8th annual Joe Lombard Scholarship, the Best Teammate Award, with the honor going to Canyon High School senior Isaiah Amaya.

Four Canyon High School seniors were finalists for the award.

During his time as an Eagle, Amaya played football and served as a team captain. He was nominated by head coach Matt Lovorn, who said Amaya’s leadership made a real impact on the program.

On the field, he earned THSCA honorable mention. Off the field, he was named academic all-state.

Amaya maintained a 3.95 GPA, is a member of National Honor Society and has been a superintendent scholar all four years.

Amaya said it means a lot to be recognized by his teammates and coaches.

“At the beginning of football season, I talked about it again, we’re just a great community,” Amaya said. “You know, everybody loves everybody, and I think this award just goes to show that. I showed love to my teammates, and I pushed them every day, and in the end, they ended up wanting to give me some love back, and honestly, I’m blessed for it. They didn’t have to do that, and I just feel very honored to be here.”

Coach Joe Lombard said Amaya’s full body of work is exactly why he is deserving of the award.

“Every one of these kids just popped out with all the things, but Isaiah’s leadership, his ability to relate to the other kids on the team, whether they were good players or not, it didn’t make any difference to Isaiah,” Lombard said. “He was an exceptional leader.”

Three other finalists were nominated: Joel Moore, Harrison Dagley and Tai Wright.
