AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Four Tascosa girls basketball players signed their national letters of intent to compete at the college level.

The athletes have been key contributors for the basketball program during their time as Lady Rebels, earning all-district and state honors.

Nic’Kiyah Fisher, South Plains Junior College

Fisher said the signing fulfilled a dream.

“This is everything I dreamed of. We worked hard to get to this point, so I’m very, very happy for my teammates and I’m very excited to sign at the same time with my teammates. I feel blessed,” Fisher said. “I also have like a community by my side as well, so it feels amazing and I’m very excited.”

“It feels great. I grew up with all of them since freshman year, so seeing our success, it’s like just seeing your big sisters grow up and it’s really fun to do it with them and just getting to prove everybody wrong and that this moment is really good,” Johnson said.

Proximity to family played a role in her college choice.

“It’s not too far from home. It was really important. If anybody knows me, you know how big my family is and how much they come to games, they’ll fill the whole stand up, so being able to stay close to them but also do my own thing is really important to me. I feel like WT is going to help ensure that I have a successful future,” Johnson said.

Johnson said her relationship with West Texas A&M Coach Prock began during her freshman year.

“He’s followed me since freshman year, so I feel like I’m just going to be so comfortable going in. I always go to the games and watch the girls, so I feel like it’s just going to be a comfortable transition for me and I’m super excited to play with them,” Johnson said.

La’Kenzee Dickson, New Mexico Junior College

Dickson said she was ready to begin the next chapter.

“It’s a very special moment to be here with all my family and friends. I’m excited and ready to start the next chapter,” Dickson said. “We started all together and it’s just very good to finish off with them.”

The program and coaching staff at New Mexico Junior College attracted her.

“The team and just how the coaches welcomed me there and they had like a very good winning program,” Dickson said.

Alex Carter, Western Texas Junior College

Carter said signing represented a childhood goal.

“It means a lot to me. It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do since I was little, so it means a lot to me that I’ve followed through with the dream that I had,” Carter said.

Her campus visit helped confirm Western Texas Junior College was the right fit.

“I went on a visit there. The coach is great, the staff is great. I met the players. I just feel like it’s a place for me,” Carter said.

Coach’s perspective

Head girls basketball coach Zac Tabor said the signing represented a milestone for the athletes.

“This is a very, very special thing that us as coaches get to do. We get to get kids signed and go to the next level and really for these four especially, it’s a dream come true. They’ve always had this in their mind and they wanted to play college basketball ever since they started playing,” Tabor said.

Tabor said the group accomplished significant achievements at Tascosa during his time coaching them.

“I could sit here all day long and talk about all the stuff that this group has helped accomplish at Tascosa. I know that I only got to coach them for about 10 months. I wish they were all getting to reclass and come back, but unfortunately, they’ve got to go on to the next chapter. Really, really happy for them, really proud of them and just super blessed and super proud of these young ladies going to the next level,” Tabor said.

He said helping students advance to college basketball is part of a high school program’s mission.

“For a high school program, you want to win, but you also want to help kids go to the next level if that’s what they want to do. So proud of these four,” Tabor said.
