GRUVER, Texas (KFDA) - The Gruver Lady Hounds rolled through the bi-district round in high school softball playoffs and this week are looking to make school history by winning an area round game or advancing to the third round of postseason play.

The Lady Hounds defeated the Lockney Lady Horns last week 15-5 in game one and 33-12 in game two to head into the area round, where they will face Sundown for the second straight year.

Team chemistry drives success

Gruver has had a strong season so far, led by leadership and an understanding that wearing the school name means greatness is expected.

Coach Lankford said the team has strong chemistry.

“Being a small school, these girls are around each other in the hallways, in the classrooms, so I do feel like our chemistry is really solid,” Lankford said. “I think they’re fighting for one another. That’s one of the things we’ve talked about is, you know, we’ve got to pick each other up. We’ve got to pass the bat. You know, one girl gets a hit. We need to pass it to the next, and then defensively, when we do have a mistake or something like that, we’ve got to be there and be supportive of one another, and they’ve done a great job of that.”

Facing the defending champion

The Lady Hounds and the Sundown Roughettes will face off Wednesday at Highland Park High School for a potential three-game series.

Sundown is the reigning state champion in 2A Division II. They also picked up a sweep over Sudan by 26 runs in the first game and five in the second.

They will look to defeat Gruver and knock them out of the playoffs for the second straight year.

First pitch in game one is set for 5:30 p.m., and game two will start at 7:30 p.m. If a game three is needed, that location, date and time is to be determined.
