CANYON, Texas (KFDA) - Canyon High School’s Bayler Schilling signed his letter of intent to play baseball at West Texas A&M University.

Schilling earned all-district honors as a pitcher during his time as an Eagle. He also played football.

Schilling said the decision to stay close to home was influenced by the coaching staff’s efforts and the program’s resources.

“Honestly, it feels unreal,” Schilling said. “I mean, I’ve worked for this since I was five years old and it’s a great feeling to be here and like just be surrounded by all these great people and my big accomplishment.”

Coaching staff changed his mind

Schilling said he initially did not plan to stay in the area.

“I mean, they did a really good job of persuading me,” Schilling said. “I wasn’t really planning on staying at home and they kind of, they changed my mind pretty quick and I really have a lot of trust in what they’ll do with me.”

Schilling cited the program’s technology and facilities as factors in his decision.

“With the technology and like how much they have compared to other places, I feel like they’ll do a really good job of just making me a better athlete,” Schilling said.
