Howard College sweeps Amarillo College in high-scoring doubleheader

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Howard College swept Amarillo College in a Saturday doubleheader, taking the opener 16-14 despite being outhit before cruising to a 14-2 victory.

Game one: Howard College 16, Amarillo College 14

The Badgers outhit the Hawks 13-12 but couldn’t overcome two massive offensive innings by Howard College. Despite mounting a furious comeback attempt, Amarillo College fell just short.

Howard College seized control with a seven-run fifth inning on five hits, highlighted by Austin Frye’s grand slam to right field that gave the Hawks a 7-4 advantage.

The Hawks put the game out of reach with an eight-run explosion in the sixth. Ethan Guzman doubled home two runs, Jaxon Wylie added an RBI double, Cash Bolgiano ripped a three-run double and Sam Distel launched a two-run homer to right.

Trailing 16-8, the Badgers mounted a desperate rally in the seventh, plating six runs on three hits. Brooks Carter delivered a two-run double and Jaykenn Marrero added an RBI single, but the comeback fell short.

Carter paced Amarillo College with three RBIs, going 2-for-4 from the three-hole. Colton McClure, Carter, Marrero, Luis Gonzalez and Gabe Compton each collected two hits. The Badgers drew seven walks and played error-free defense.

Frye drove in four runs for Howard College while David Hernandez led the Hawks with three hits.

Game two: Howard College 14, Amarillo College 2

The second game proved far less competitive as Howard College dominated from start to finish.

After Amarillo College tied the game at 1-1 in the first on Marrero’s RBI double, Howard College seized control with a five-run third inning. Frye’s two-run double highlighted the rally that gave the Hawks a 6-1 cushion they never relinquished.

Ryder Melsa earned the win for Howard College, scattering six hits and allowing two runs over six innings with four strikeouts. Eli Heyen took the loss for the Badgers, surrendering six runs over two and one-third innings.

McClure and Carter each collected two hits for Amarillo College. Distel paced Howard College with four hits while Hernandez, Frye and Colton Klapprodt each drove in three runs. The Hawks amassed 14 hits, drew seven walks and turned two double plays.
