DUMAS, Texas (KFDA) - Vida Fierro has excelled on the field and in the classroom throughout her senior season as center fielder for the No. 1 ranked Dumas Demonettes’ softball team.

Fierro posts a .481 batting average with 39 total hits, including 16 singles, 13 doubles, one triple and nine home runs. On defense, she has a perfect fielding percentage with 26 putouts, three assists and two double plays.

“It feels good that it doesn’t go unnoticed,” Fierro said. “I mean, I put hard work in by myself and at practice with my team. And yeah, it just feels good.”

Leadership and work ethic

Head coach Carlyn Tolleson said Fierro’s work ethic sets the tone for the team.

“Vida works so hard day in and day out. She put it in the reps. She’s a big-time captain and leader for us, and she just gives it her all, every pitch, every play, and she’s just a great leader for this team,” Tolleson said. “She does a great job on and off the field, and she’s just an incredible athlete and a dream to coach. Every moment she plays, she just has that energy, and she brings that energy and vibe, and just works so hard when we’re watching her, when we’re not watching her. I mean, she’s just an incredible teammate, an incredible player, and just person.”

As she closes out her senior season, Fierro said she is focused on consistency and leadership.

“Definitely just be consistent, be a good leader for my team, and, you know, try to be consistent for them, and yeah, just provide everything for them,” Fierro said.

Balancing school and sports

Fierro said managing academics and athletics is difficult but worthwhile.

“Sometimes it’s really hard to manage, but I mean, it’s all worth it at the end,” Fierro said. “School is very important to me. Obviously, that’s going to get me far in the future in the long run.”

Tolleson said academics are the priority.

“That’s the most important thing is grades and making sure they’re caught up there,” Tolleson said. “I’m just proud of them for working so hard in the classroom, getting all that done, and still giving it their all on the field.”

Senior season

With a senior-heavy roster, Fierro said the team is focused on finishing strong.

“We’re a really senior-heavy team this year, and I’m just excited to finish off the season, all of us together, all our sisters together,” Fierro said. “Yeah, go big or go home.”

Fierro has been named to the TGCA All-State team, earned two First Team All-District selections, received three Academic All-District honors and was named Ford Texas Player of the Month in March 2024. Fierro carries a 97.94 GPA.
