CANYON, Texas (KFDA) - Local basketball standout Devaeh Johnson is staying in the Panhandle. The Tascosa High School forward announced her commitment to West Texas A&M for the 2026-27 season, giving Lady Buffs head coach Josh Prock another versatile weapon for his roster.

Johnson brings an impressive resume to Canyon after helping lead the Rebels to a 32-4 record and a berth in the 5A Division I Regional Championship game. The 5-foot-9 forward earned District Offensive Player of the Year honors and all-state recognition during her senior campaign.

Defensive versatility key to recruitment

Prock highlighted Johnson’s ability to impact both ends of the floor as a major factor in her recruitment.

“Her ability to guard multiple positions will be extremely valuable to us,” Prock said. “On the offensive end, she has the complete game, she is able to score at all three levels of the court.”

The Lady Buffs coach also praised Johnson’s character beyond basketball.

“Devaeh also represents everything we are looking for in a Lady Buff Basketball Player in the classroom and outside the school,” Prock said. “She was very blessed to be coached in high school by two outstanding high school coaches in Zac Tabor and Chris Sumrall, which both did a great job in preparing her for the next level.”

Tabor: One of Tascosa’s all-time greats

Tascosa head coach Zac Tabor called Johnson one of the most accomplished players in program history.

“She is one of Tascosa’s most decorated players of all time with a lot of big game experience,” Tabor said. “WT is getting an outstanding player who will be able to play multiple positions and thrive in whatever role helps the team win.”

Tabor expressed confidence that Johnson will succeed at the collegiate level under Prock’s guidance.

“With her willingness to work hard and put the team first she will flourish under Coach Prock’s leadership,” he said.
