AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Two Amarillo High Lady Sandies soccer players signed with Cisco College on Wednesday. Sophia Hernandez and Madison Hoskins will play for the Wranglers next year.
Hernandez brings scoring threat
Hernandez said having a familiar teammate will make the transition easier.
“It is a blessing, I’ll tell you that,” Hernandez said. “I’m so grateful that I know someone that’s going to Cisco and rooming with her. We’ve been playing for so long, our chemistry is there and it’s perfect. I’m just so blessed.”
Hernandez said the coaches and players at Cisco were a big part of her decision.

Amarillo High head girls soccer coach Stacey McPherson said Hernandez has been a key player for the program. Hernandez has played striker for the Lady Sandies and has scored somewhere near 70 goals in her career.

“She is definitely a lethal threat up at the top for us and we’re so excited that she’s going to carry on,” McPherson said.
McPherson said Hernandez is also an academic all-state athlete with a GPA above 90.
“She not only takes care of soccer, but she takes care of her school work and that’s something that we want to actually be proud of, for that accomplishment as well,” McPherson said. “She’s definitely going to be missed, but we are rooting for her. I know as long as she works hard, she does that every day, she’s going to continue to improve and we’re going to see a lot of great things from her and we’re just excited for her.”
Hoskins adds versatility
Hoskins said signing with a teammate made the moment more meaningful.
“It’s a really huge thing because every athlete dreams about playing at the next level so getting to do that with someone I’m already so close with, getting to room with her. She said our chemistry is great, she’s so right,” Hoskins said. “It’s just really exciting, it’s really comforting to go into this huge life change with someone that I know so well.”

Hoskins said the culture and coaching staff at Cisco influenced her decision.
“The culture was really great, all the opportunities that come with it, the coaches were really awesome,” Hoskins said. “The girls chemistry already on that team was really great... it was perfect.”

McPherson said Hoskins transitioned from forward to defender and has grown in the position.
“The one thing that’s really great about her is she’s not afraid to get up the field. When we play the formation that we do, her doing that helps provide that extra support up there offensively,” McPherson said. “She has some great crosses and she just works really hard.”
McPherson said Hoskins is also an academic all-state athlete. Hoskins is entering Cisco as a sophomore based on her grades.
“The work ethic on the field, work ethic in the classroom are extremely important and we know she’s going to do some great things in college and she’s going to make an impact as well,” McPherson said. “She’s very versatile so she’ll be able to play different positions for their community college, so we’re just wishing her all the best and excited that she’s decided to go on and play and we know she will do some great things.”
