AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The Holy Cross Mustangs have taken the TAPPS playoffs by storm, reaching the state semifinals for the first time in program history.
It wasn’t an easy road to get here. The Mustangs faced a tough pre-district schedule playing teams from all divisions, which helped prepare them for district play. Holy Cross went 14-0 in TAPPS 2A District One to claim the outright title.
Playoff run
The Mustangs have taken down Mercy Culture Prep, Southcrest Christian and most recently Victory Christian Academy to earn their spot in the state semifinals.
Facing a powerhouse
Holy Cross will face No. 1-ranked First Baptist Academy next, and head coach Austin Turner said his team knows what it will take to get the win.
“This late in the season, it’s kind of you are who you are, and we spoke about our identity, and we know we’re playing some really good opponents, and we’re going to have to bring our A-game,” Turner said. “First Baptist...they’re a traditional kind of powerhouse, so we have to defend at a high level and execute on offense at a high level, take care of the ball.”
The No. 2-ranked Mustangs will travel east Wednesday to face No. 1-ranked First Baptist Academy in Waco at Robinson High School. Tip-off is set for noon. The winner advances to the TAPPS 2A state finals.
