AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Saberina Matas and Nereida Porras are sticking together and will take their talents to Eastern New Mexico. The Lady Horns soccer players have been an integral part of Caprock throughout their high school careers.
Matas’ accolades include honorable mention all-district as a junior and first-team all-district honors as a sophomore. Porras made the first-team all-district list during her sophomore year and earned second-team all-district honors in her junior year.
The four-year starters are excited to become future Greyhounds, but this next chapter means more because the best friends get to play side by side in their collegiate careers.
Best friends excited to play in college together
The players said their college partnership wasn’t initially planned but became an exciting opportunity.
“Honestly, it wasn’t really planned, but as soon as we got both invited to go practice, we were like, this is a perfect chance. And what could be even better than being roommates with your best friend from high school?” Matas said. “She’s my best friend, and we’ve always been together. We’ve played since eighth grade year, and just there’s nothing better than that.”

Porras said having her best friend makes the transition easier.
“I’m really excited, just because she’s my best friend, and I’ve been really close to her since freshman year. And it’s not as hard leaving home when I’m taking a piece of home with me,” she said.
Coach praises both players
The coach reflected on the significance of the moment for both families and praised the players’ contributions to the program.
“I’ve known both these young girls since they were in junior high,” the coach said. “And so like I said, they’ve been around the program for a long time. In our summer camps, they were always invested in soccer, always.”
The coach highlighted Matas’ leadership qualities and athletic ability.

“Saberina, she’s been a student leader on the field, in the classroom. She is a phenomenal athlete. She had an amazing freshman, sophomore, junior year this year. Got cut a little short due to an injury. But we are thankful that she gets to continue playing again. We can see her on the field again next year,” the coach said.
The coach praised Porras’ versatility and dedication.
“Nereida, I mean, she has been an incredible student athlete. She’s also an all-around player on the field. I’ve had her at center back, I’ve had her at mid, and of course, watch her now, she’s up top now. She’ll do whatever it takes for this program. Both these young women have,” the coach said.
The coach expressed pride in both players’ contributions to the program.
“I cannot be more proud of the coach to have these two come through Caprock. They have been nothing but special and done everything they’ve ever been asked to do. And they truly help keep Caprock soccer on the map,” the coach said.
