CANYON, Texas (KFDA) - District play for high school basketball is officially in the back half of the schedule, and the race is starting to take shape on the court. Only a few teams around the area are pushing the needle within the district still standing undefeated, and one of them is Canyon girls basketball program as they continue to dominate their competition and maintain their high ranking.

The number two ranked Lady Eagles have not let up throughout the course of the season, handling tough competition and currently having only two losses to their name. They continue to rise to the challenge as they walk into their second go around in district play.

Head coach Tate Lombard feels there is a difference in how the team is handling the schedule, especially from the start of the season to now, because of competition they have been able to go up against and the team leadership that has been shown as the season progresses.

“They’re getting a lot of experience and seeing different styles of teams,” Lombard said. “Our older kids are kind of taking over that leadership role. And then our younger kids are coming in and finding ways to impact the team. So we hope that keeps turning in that direction.”

Remaining schedule

Only five more games are left as teams are starting to knock on the post-season door. The Lady Eagles will hit the road this upcoming Tuesday to play the Perryton Rangerettes, then on January 30 they can be seen in action against Randall.

To start the month of February they will play the Demonettes in Dumas, and then they will stay on the road for a game against Borger. To close out their district play, they will go up against their CISD rivalry in their last home game for the regular season when they go head to head with the West Plains Lady Wolves.
