CANYON, Texas (KFDA) - Canyon High School baseball player Jaxson Buchanan signed his National Letter of Intent with Oklahoma Christian University, making his collegiate athletic career official.

During his time with the Eagles, he has played several positions including third base, outfielder and pitcher.

Buchanan said hardships throughout his career made him grateful for the opportunity to play for OCU.

Injury recovery leads to breakthrough

Buchanan broke his tibia in a spiral fracture while playing last year, just three days before the team’s first game.

“So, last year I had broken my tibia. I had a spiral fracture whenever I was playing. It was three days before our first game and so when I broke it I went through 12 to 16 month process of rehab and physical therapy,” Buchanan said.

The injury created doubts about his baseball future.

“It was kind of hard to get back into the game because I thought that was my breaking point and that was going to be the end of everything but with that I learned to overcome hardships with it and that was going to be my way back into the game,” he said.

Strong performance earns college offer

Buchanan said his recovery led to his best baseball performance.

“I know that was the best summer baseball that I’ve ever played before. So with that and then the fall season as well I played really well,” he said. “Whenever we went to Oklahoma Christian the coach gave me an offer and told me that I would do really good here and that I might have a starting spot.”

Buchanan credited his faith for helping him through the recovery process.

“So it was a little hard but God helped me in a lot of ways and without him I don’t think I would have been able to do that,” he said.
