AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The Palo Duro Lady Dons defeated the Monterey Lady Plainsmen 57-52, while the Monterey boys basketball team won 73-65 on the road in district play.
Lady Dons control second half
In the girls game, Addi Johnson drove into the paint and found Dani Gilbreath, who brought the ball back to the top of the key. Gilbreath sent it to Braya Smith, who took it to the basket for an and-one opportunity.
Johnson sent the ball down court to Zenib Deng, who fed Tayleeh Meander on the block for a layup.
The Lady Dons showed good ball movement on offense. Johnson, pressured near half court, found Meander down low. Meander got around the defense and added two points for Palo Duro.
The Lady Dons secured the district win 57-52.

Monterey boys take road victory
In the boys game, Monterey got a steal as Larry Galloway lobbed the ball to Cainan Long at the three-point line. Long connected on the triple.
Cheston Mitchell Jr. brought the ball down court and went one-on-one against his defender. Mitchell spun into the paint and made the layup.
Mitchell penetrated into the paint but backed out and passed to Deuce Reese. Reese tried to go inside but got cut off and handed it to Cuda Clayton. Clayton drove all the way to the basket for the score.
Mitchell attempted an elbow jumper that missed, but Kyron Brown grabbed the offensive rebound. Brown’s put-back attempt was no good, but he tried again and made the second attempt.
The Plainsmen took the road win 73-65.
