AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - As the high school soccer season gets underway, the Amarillo High Lady Sandies are getting back on the field, looking to build off last year’s success and make another strong run through district and the postseason.

Last year, the Lady Sandies put up another run to remember, dominating against district opponents and finishing with a perfect 14-0 record to claim the district championship. They carried that winning momentum into the playoffs, getting all the way to the fourth round before falling to Colleyville Heritage for the second straight season.

Setting a new standard

Lady Sandies head coach Stacey McPherson and her girls have walked into this season ready to have another successful run, using last season as fuel to get beyond what they have done in previous years. Their ultimate goal is to have a rematch against the Panthers, but this time being on the winning side.

“We want to go a little further and we haven’t done that at Amarillo High yet, and obviously it’s great where we have gotten to the past couple years getting to regionals. We want to make that next step and so that’s something that we’re working towards and I think that’s the goal that the girls are looking towards fulfilling” McPherson said.

McPherson emphasized taking the season one game at a time while keeping the bigger picture in mind.

“The focus is on the next game, but at the end of the season, yes, we want to make it back there and we want another shot at Colleyville Heritage,” she said.

Season schedule ahead

The Lady Sandies will take a couple weeks off and enjoy their Christmas break before starting the New Year with a game on New Year’s Day in a tournament. Their first game will be against Frisco Memorial.

They will see other teams from around the state like Huntsville and Dripping Springs. The team will have back-to-back tournaments before hitting district play.

Their first district match is against the Lady Dons on Jan. 13, followed by Plainview a week later on Jan. 20.
