CANYON, Texas (KFDA) - Canyon ISD has named Matt Lovorn as head football coach and boys coordinator at Canyon High School.

He served as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator starting in 2023 before being promoted to acting head coach midway through the 2025 season. Under his leadership, Canyon reached the regional finals.
Lovorn, a Canyon High graduate, has more than 15 years of high school coaching experience.
Before returning to his alma mater, Lovorn coached at Stratford ISD for 14 seasons. As head coach there, he posted an 89-22 record and guided the program to the 2021 Class 2A Division II State Championship. He also led Stratford to several district titles and playoff runs.
Lovorn has experience as an athletic director and has held leadership positions with the Texas High School Coaches Association. His coaching philosophy centers on character, accountability, and academic achievement.

The new head coach said he is committed to continuing Canyon’s football tradition while developing players both on and off the field.
“It’s a dream come true to be able to come here and be the head football coach,” Lovorn said. “I never thought that I would be in this spot, but I’m very, very fortunate and blessed.”
Lovorn emphasized the importance of maintaining the program’s established values while focusing on two key principles moving forward.
“There’s a lot of good things over several years, over several decades, within our traditions at Canyon High, with Canyon football that have been great, that we’re really gonna need to hang on to,” he said.
“The two things at the top of our list are our integrity and our toughness, and those are two things that we don’t only preach to win football games, but also to win in life. So whenever we can hang our hat on those, then good things are gonna happen for us.”
