AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The West Texas High Comanches are one of two Panhandle teams still pursuing a state title this football season in 2-A Division I, and they are doing it in historic fashion.

The Comanches remain unbeaten in the 2025 football campaign, which is history in itself for West Texas High. After a 48-22 victory against Cisco last Friday, the Comanches improved their record to 14-0 for the season.

With that win, WT High ended a 29-year drought and advanced to the state semifinals, marking one of the program’s biggest postseason runs in school history.

Coach emphasizes preparation and focus

Head coach Jeff Smith said his team understands the excitement of continuing in the season while recognizing that each game at this time of year is vital.

When it comes to the upcoming matchup, Smith knows the stats are there and limiting errors is needed. He also knows the team is excited for the challenge against the Bulldogs.

“These are the kind of games that you dream about playing it, you know, it doesn’t you can throw all the stats and all that stuff out the window at this time of year, you know,” Smith said.

“You’ve got to show up and and play and you’ve got to limit penalties. You got to limit turnovers and you know mistakes are mistakes are killer this time of year,” Smith said.

Smith said the experience will be memorable for his players.

“And you know, this is this is something that they’ll they’ll never forget I’m sure,” he said.

State semifinal matchup details

West Texas High and Hamilton will play Thursday at 6 p.m. at Hawk Stadium in Iowa Park. This is the first time these two teams will face each other on the football field.

The winner will claim their spot in the 2-A Division I state championship game.
