AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Coach Johnson made history by earning his 600th career win as the Lady Dons defeated their opponent 41-38 in a close contest. The emotions were evident from the coach after the game.
Fourth quarter rally
In the fourth quarter, Gilbreath directed the team as Meander cut to the basket. Meander drew the and-one and closed the deficit to three points for the Lady Dons late in the fourth quarter.
The final score was 41-38, giving Coach Johnson his milestone 600th career victory in an emotional win for the program.
Coach reflects on milestone achievement
Johnson said the comeback victory will be memorable and credited the many people who helped him reach 600 wins.
“It’s one of those games that you’ll remember forever because we came from behind to win it and won it by a couple of points. We had a lot of kids that come through here to help me get those 600 wins. We had a lot of coaches that have come through that has done a great job,” Johnson said.

Johnson said having the community and former players present made the moment special.
“So having the community and some of my ex-players coming back, it meant a lot to us in the north side,” he says.
“I remember win number 300, my daughter was the one that handed me the plaque. Well, tonight, it was just the opposite. It was win number 600 and I got my granddaughter handing me the plaque. So it was great. It was a good feeling tonight,” he said.
