AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Randall Raider wrestling star Mikey Ruiz signed his National Letter of Intent with the Oklahoma Sooners today, committing to the Division I program.
Ruiz has won three consecutive state championships during his three years of high school, wrestling in the 126-pound weight class for the Raiders.
Why Oklahoma
The wrestler credited his teammates and coaches for his success and said the team atmosphere at Oklahoma influenced his decision to become a Sooner.
“I always wanted to wrestle with D1. I always wanted to be the best out of everybody, and that was just the next step. Finding the good coaches, a good school, and good teammates around me,” Ruiz said. “I saw OU and I liked OU, I loved it there.”
Support system at Randall
Ruiz said the support system at Randall helped shape his success.

“The people that have been around here, that came before me, after me. The people that Coach [David Quirino] knows, they helped me out to get better, beat the best, beat the top guys, to get me where I’m at today,” he said.
Competitive drive
The three-time state champion described his competitive drive and approach to wrestling.
“Just willing to win. I just really want to win that bad, I don’t like losing,” Ruiz said. “I go really hard when I have a chance, every single time. The better I do, the more opportunities open. I use all those opportunities to the fullest so I can get more opportunities, so I can get better, and that’s how I’ve always been doing it since I was five.”
Family thanks
Ruiz thanked his support system for helping him reach this milestone.
“I want to thank my family, my cousins, and my Uncle David,” he said.
