Area athletes and teams advance to UIL state cross country meet

Regional competition sends qualifiers to state championships

REGION I GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS REGION I GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS (KFDA)

LUBBOCK, Texas (KFDA) - Canyon ISD schools dominated regional cross country competition Tuesday, with multiple teams and individuals qualifying for the UIL state meet across several classifications.

Boys Region I-5A

Palo Duro’s Abdihafit Mohamed qualified individually in Region I-5A with a fourth-place finish.

Girls Region I-4A results

The Canyon Lady Eagles won their second straight regional championship with 25 points, placing four runners in the top 10.

Addison Bristow led the Lady Eagles with her third straight Region I-4A individual title. Presli Pool finished second, Michaela Sharber placed fifth overall, and Crickette Morris rounded out Canyon’s top 10 finishers with an eighth-place finish.

Randall finished second with 58 points and will make its 17th state meet appearance. Rebel Rea led the Lady Raiders with a fourth-place finish, Brooke French placed seventh and Nayomi Granados finished ninth.

West Plains placed third with 132 points to earn its first state meet appearance with four runners finishing in the top 30. Brielle Stone led the team with a 17th-place finish. Charleigh Jackson placed 25th, and Hannah Smith finished 29th.

Emily Gross of Dumas qualified individually with a third-place finish.

Boys Region I-4A

Canyon won its fifth straight Region I-4A championship with 24 points and Perryton earned its first state trip in five years with 143 points.

Dominic San Miguel won the individual title and Noah Cooper finishing second. Grady Simmons placed sixth, Ethan Labue finished seventh, and Jamison Kirton placed eighth.

Perryton’s Jacob Erickson earned the bronze medal with a third-place finish. Alex Grajeda placed 27th, and Ethan Ruelas finished 29th.

Noah Holland of West Plains qualified individually with an 11th-place finish.

Adrian Solis of Dumas also advanced individually, finishing 20th.

Boys/Girls Region I-3A results

In Region I-3A, the Dalhart Lady Wolves earned their fourth straight state trip with a fourth-place team finish at 175 points. Victoria Terrazas led Dalhart with a ninth-place finish while Circe Johnson placed 15th.

Childress’ Selah Smith qualified individually with an eighth-place finish.

Canadian’s Joseph Dominguez won the bronze medal with a third-place individual finish.

Boys/Girls Region I-2A results

The Gruver Greyhounds and Lady Hounds won both team titles.

The Lady Hounds won with 60 points where Paisley Quirck led Gruver with a fourth-place finish. Hallie McLain placed seventh, and Marlee Maupin finished 12th.

The Gruver boys won with 82 points, Gustavo Quintana led with a ninth-place finish and Cesar Trejo placed 10th.

Clarendon Lady Broncos finished second with 126 points. Madilyn Benson placed eighth, and Addyson Havens finished ninth.

Alexis Wade of Farwell won the silver medal with a second-place individual finish and her teammate Ava Jaime qualified finishing in fifth and on the boys side Josiah Lopez qualified individually with a fifth-place finish.

Other individual qualifiers include Spearman’s Maddox Ortiz, Kellen Henderson of Sanford-Fritch, Wellington’s Taytum Kane, and Panhandle teammates Emrey Light and Bently Blackburn.

Boys/Girls Region I-1A results

Boys Ranch won its first Region I-1A team title since 2013 with 82 points and Booker placed third with 101 points.

Roughriders’ Carter Esteban won the individual championship, Chase Fritcher placed second and Paul Jackson also contributed with an 11th-place finish.

Individual qualifiers included Valley’s Micah Ferrel (third), Adrian’s Jael Acosta, Hart’s Avram Morales and Claude’s Lane Taylor.

Texline finished second with 108 points, Nazareth placed third with 134 points.

Texline’s Samantha Young led her team with a seventh-place finish. Nazareth’s Madison Brockman placed 14th.

Happy’s Kyla Slaughter won the individual championship and Claude’s Shealee Brannon placed second.

Other individual qualifiers included Hart’s America Flores, White Deer’s Makayla Chaney, Silverton’s Melody Rampley, Valley’s Hartley Battey, and McLean’s Gracee Henderson.
