CANYON, Texas (KFDA) - Canyon Eagles team tennis was crowned the champions of District 5-4A after completing a perfect district season on Tuesday.

A perfect 10-10 in district matches, the first time Canyon has hit that mark since 2020, something that head coach David De Leon and his team is proud of.

“Being able to say that you won them all is great, and we’re really proud,” says De Leon. “Going unblemished in this district is something I’ve never done, something Canyon hasn’t done since 2020.”

The Eagles started off the team tennis season with back-to-back wins over Brownfield and Palo Duro.

They stayed up at the 5A level to face Amarillo High and Tascosa, unable to secure victories and dropping to 2-2 on the season.

After that match against Tascosa, Canyon didn’t end up on the losing side again for the rest of the regular season.

With that in the books, and the playoffs on the horizon, De Leon says his team has fully turned their attention to achieve the goal they set out for at the beginning of the season — a trip to the state tournament.

“We’re excited, but we’re eager to get back to normal and start our playoff run.”
