AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Deke Carter became the head football coach at Wildorado just a little over a month ago, but he’s already hit the ground running to prepare his team for success this season.
This is his first head coaching job ever. Before, he used to be a trainer, working with athletes in and around the area.
Brayden Sides, a senior on the Wildorado football team, says Carter has been getting the squad in shape during the offseason.
“We have been working really hard to be where we’re at now,” Sides said. “Coach Carter has been really conditioning us a lot more than any coach has.”
More than just getting his guys ready on the field, he’s also made this team whole once again.

“It’s good that we have a coach that can see everyone’s talent and give them an opportunity to be on the field and play and show how good we are,” said senior Kole Skidgel.
“He’s got us really put back together as a team,” said teammate and senior Caden McLaughlin, in reference to Carter.
It’s all about having the right mentality early on.
“Being able to come in and know what it takes to accomplish your vision and not get hung up on the adversity or the downfalls...to understand that life’s gonna throw you these situations...you’ve got to fight through it,” said Carter. “But, coming together is the most important thing.”
He feels confident in this team’s ability to thrive this season.
