VEGA, Texas (KFDA) - The sun is out, the pads are on and the Vega Longhorns are back to work on the gridiron.
“It’s like the night before Christmas,” says Vega head coach Jason Porton. “The night before two-a-days is like the night before Christmas.”
Vega finished 1-8 last season, and Porton is leaning on his returning guys to right the ship.
“We did graduate several seniors from last year but we return a lot of experience because we have several guys that have been playing since their freshman, sophomore year,” Porton says. “Up front we’ve got 4 guys that have played a tremendous amount of snaps over the last three years and and they’re doing a great job.”
Along with the O-Line, quarterback Kase Vogler is back behind center and ready to make an impact.

“Junior year was my first year getting real varsity reps and that’s a good experience for me, and now senior year comes around and I know what’s going on and I can really get some good reads and make some plays happen,” Vogler says.
“[Kase] took a lot of chewing’s from me but he grew from it and he’s done a great job,” Porton says. “It’s night and day where he’s at now compared to a year ago.”
Experience is a positive, and mixing that with good relationships is a recipe for success.
“I’m looking to go out there see what we can do as a team,” says Vega senior lineman Trypp Busby.
“We’ve been together for quite a few years now, we’ve been a young team in the past so this year we’re really looking forward to do special things.”
