CANYON, Texas (KFDA) - Canyon senior Brooklyn Kinsey won the Joe Lombard Scholarship for the Best Teammate Award on Wednesday.
Kinsey is the eighth winner of this award. The scholarship award began back in 2018.
The criteria for the award is as follows: a senior boy or girl who has participated in at least one year of varsity sport and has to be nominated by a Canyon ISD athletic director, administrator, coach, teacher, or counselor.
Kinsey was nominated for the award by associate principal by Jessica Ray who said this:
“Brooklyn stands out as the best teammate in the class of 2025, both on the court and on the bench.”

Kinsey says this is a honor of a lifetime.

“It’s one thing to get sports achievements and to win a gold medal or, you know, to win certain games and stuff, but I think that something like this...I’m not going to be able to play sports for the rest of my life, so, if I can carry these characteristics into college and then a job, I think that speaks more than even winning a state championship,” she said.
Coach Joe Lombard says Kinsey was a perfect recipient for the award.
“No one leads better than she does,” said Lombard. “It’s just a blessing to have on her team. [I’m] glad I got to work with her for some years and see her grow up and turn to a great young lady.”
Kinsey was awarded a plaque and a $1,000 check for winning the scholarship.
As a Lady Eagle, she competed on the volleyball, basketball, and track team. She won a gold medal this year in the state track competition in Austin for her efforts in the 1600-meter relay race.

There were four other finalists for the award: Cali McKinley, Jaylee Moss, Sydnee Winfrey, and Kinley Howell.
