AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The #9 Amarillo High Lady Sandies defeated the #1 Monterey Lady Plainsmen on Tuesday, 73-66.
The Lady Sandies were led by their big three of Ca’Nia Mitchell, Tyler Held and Bella Edwards, who had 19, 16 and 16 points, respectively. Ella Brown and Kam Soukup also finished in double figures, scoring 12 and 10.
Monterey star senior and top-ranked prospect in the country Aaliyah Chavez led all scorers with 30, while Khloei Serna and Ambrosia Cole contributed 11 and 10, respectively.
Amarillo High head coach Jeff Williams knows the importance of getting a win over a big-time opponent late in the season.
“Gosh almighty, you’ve got the number one player in the nation right there, you know?” Williams said. “[It’s the] last chance we have to play those guys, I’m going to miss that because it’s such a challenge, but [the win] means a lot.”

It was a back-and-forth game from the start. After Monterey scored 21 points in the first quarter, Amarillo High outscored them 20-10 in the second, heading into halftime with a five-point lead.
The Lady Sandies pressed hard on the gas pedal in the third quarter. As time expired, Edwards knocked down a spectacular step-back three-pointer over Chavez to give them a seven-point lead.
“Man, that felt amazing,” Edwards said after the game. “When that shot went up, I felt the adrenaline coming at me.”
Amarillo High went on to hold their lead through the entirety of the fourth quarter en route to their victory.
With the win, Amarillo High takes sole possession of the district lead, for now, with a district mark of 13-2 and an overall record of 27-5. They get a night off this Friday, then will finish the season on the road at Lubbock-Cooper on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 6:00 p.m. A win would clinch at least a share of the district title.
