AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The bi-district football playoff round has officially ended in the state of Texas, and one team gave another a huge upset.
The four seed, the River Road Wildcats, beat the one seed, the Lamesa Tornadoes, Thursday in a 23-21 upset after the Wildcats hit the game winning field goal.
River Road head football coach, Bryan Welps, said he always knew his team was capable of finding success.
“This it’s a new slate...it’s a new season,” Welps said. “Everybody’s zero and zero. You win or you go home...you just keep going and you live to play the next week, and that’s my kids mentality. Now that we’re in this new system, I mean teams can change and teams can get better and they they get more confident and you want to be peaking at this time of year. It’s not sometimes the most talented team that wins every game, it’s a team that wants to keep playing.”
The Wildcats' next matchup is this Thursday at Lowrey Field against the Vernon Lions at 6:30 p.m. The winner of the game will advance to the regional finals.
