Countdown to Kickoff: Amarillo High Golden Sandies

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - It was an early day for the Golden Sandies, getting ready as week one of the high school football season gets closer and closer.

Head coach, Chad Dunnam and his squad hoping to build off a nice year last season, finishing 6-6 and winning one of their two playoffs games.

Coach Dunnam says that even with losing a group of seniors last year, new leaders have stepped up and are looking to make a big impact.

“Every year, when you come back from Christmas and you walk in that locker room and those seniors aren’t around there, there’s an awkward feeling,” Dunnam said. “I think our to-be seniors this past January realized that when they walked in there. They were like ‘where are these guys, they’re not here?’”

Coach Dunnam also expressed the fact that every team has a new identity, and the Golden Sandies have started to figure out what that will be for the 2024-25 season, and he can’t wait to watch it unfold.

“I’m really excited at the direction that our leadership is going right now with our senior class,” Dunnam said.

The Golden Sandies one of the teams who get started on Thursday, August 29th, traveling to Odessa to start the season.

District 2-5A DI is one of the larger ones in the area, so their district play gets started just a month into the season against Monterey.

Three district games before their bye week and then three more against Coronado, Lubbock High and Tascosa to wrap up the season.
